WORKING AT KALA ART INSTITUTE: PROJECT ROOM ONE
"ASPHALT & HONEY: something gritty, something sweet"
Susannah Israel worked on Asphalt & Honey during her 2023-2024 artist residency at Kala Art Institute, dedicating the month of November 2023 in Project Room One to an ongoing public process. Asphalt & Honey is an installation of terracotta, mixed media, light and sound. Welcoming fellow artist, curators, neighbors and visitors to the workspace, Israel explored and developed the final concept for this massive 23-figure piece. Viewers have given personal responses to the work and contributed their stories to be incorporated in the final installation. The artist says: "One month, three processes, two figures, fourteen artist visits and eleven materials = a phenomenal residency experience at Kala Art Institute!

ABOUT KALA ART INSTITUTE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM
Artists working in various printmaking techniques, photo processes, book arts, and digital media including video production can apply to become an Artist-in-Residence. Residency applications are accepted online three times per year. Artists who apply for a residency should be familiar with at least one of the media and equipment offered at Kala. Considerations for acceptance are conceptual creativity and technical knowledge. Resident artists receive year-round 24-hour access to the printmaking workshop, digital lab, black and white darkroom, individual storage space, small project spaces (if available), possible exposure on Kala’s website and in other exhibitions at Kala or outside exhibition spaces, and participation in a vital, international artist community.
