First step is making sketches, then the maquette, then forming, construction and assembly, then carefully painting on layers of color. After about a month of careful drying, the piece is placed in the kiln for firing.  The final color is the rich natural terracotta with engobes, at a temperature of 2100 degrees Fahrenheit.
